DAY 2: 12 AUGUST 2017 COLOMBO
Sri Lanka’s capital city is filled with colonial heritage, and a sightseeing tour unveils the city’s many charms, including a guided walk through the colonial Fort area and the colour and atmosphere of Pettah, Colombo’s vibrant market area and one of Asia’s classic street markets. (B/D)
DAY 3: 13 AUGUST 2017 SIGIRIYA
Accommodation: Cinnamon Lodge.
Travel to the fishing and beach town of Negombo to see the town’s famous fish market, the Llelama, where traditional boats haul in their catches for sale – a little on the nose but a fascinating sight. Continue on to Habarana. (B/D)
DAY 4: 14 AUGUST 2017 POLONNARUWA
Spend time in rural Sri Lanka for a deeper understanding of village life, where famers work the land according to the changing seasons. You will also have a chance to sample some delicious village cuisine as well as helping , before continuing on to ancient Polonnaruwa and its historic attractions. The rest of evening at leisure. DAY 5: 15 AUGUST 2017 SIGIRIYA & RITIGALA
Visit one of Asia’s most spectacular cultural sites, the Sigiriya Rock fortress. Only the fit and adventurous will want to climb the rock, but all can enjoy the superb ruins and fine views around the base. For those unable to do the climb a visit to the Sigiriya Museum is highly recommended. Later drive through lush tropical forest, with monkeys swinging on the branches of tall trees, to visit a strict nature reserve and an ancient Buddhist monastery dating back to the 1st century BC. DAY 6: 16 AUGUST 2017 DAMBULLA – KANDY
Accommodation: Suisse Hotel.
After breakfast leave for a visit to the rock cave temples of Dambulla. The temple complex consists of 5 caves which have been converted to shrines. Evening in Kandy at leisure. (B/D)
DAY 7: 17 AUGUST 2017 KANDY
Visit the famous Sri Dalada Maligawa – Kandy’s revered Temple of the Tooth Relic. It was built within the royal palace complex and houses only surviving relic of Buddha, which is venerated by Buddhists. Later, visit Peradeniya Botanical Gardens; these started off as a pleasure gardens for Sinhalese Royalty and was turned into Botanical a garden by the British in 1843. All plants and trees are marked with their botanical names. It was also the location of the supreme headquarters of Lord Mountbatten during World War 2. It has an amazing collection of over 300 varieties of orchids, probably the largest collection in Asia. (B/D)
DAY 8: 18 AUGUST 2017 TRAIN JOURNEY & NUWARA ELIYA
Accommodation: Grand Hotel.
After breakfast drive down to the railway station and then experience one of the most exciting and scenic train journeys on the island, around the Tea covered mountains, through tunnels and over bridges. Upon arrival at the station, you will be met by your chauffer guide. Continue tour into the hills. En route stop to visit one of the area’s renowned tea factories, and learn more about this famous Sri Lankan export. (B/D)
